In my personal view, this is the most beautiful bridge in Putrajaya- during day or night. The second in place is Jambatan Putra.By the way,Putrajaya has six more nice bridges.Just read about them at Putrajaya Corporation homepage.
Bridge is quite close to my heart and my stomach. As a civil and structural engineer(graduated from Sheffield University in 1976),I love the beauty of structural engineering analysis. My lecturers were Dr I.W Burgess and Dr Nethercott. However, bridge construction is a very high risk business.Personally,I was involved as JKR engineer in construction supervision and maintenance work of bridges. When I became a contractor,I built nine bridges.During the course of my work in JKR,I had to use Bailey Bridges for temporary crossings.Mr Bailey was a Sheffield graduate who invented the bridge during World War II.
I have a love and hate affair with this bridge every time I ride my bicycle across it.The vertical climbing curve is quite tough for a senior citizen like me but I got rewarded on downhill ride.Every time I cycle here,I must do a pitstop to recover my breath and take some photos of my cycling buddies against the beautiful background of the bridge. At night,it is more beautiful; no matter where you are-on the bridge, under the bridge or some where at Taman Seri Empangan having dinner of ikan bakar there.
All these photos were taken by me during my cycling activities on or near this bridge. It was a great challenge for me to get these shots as an amateur photographer even though I am a professional engineer. However,I tried the best I could.
Honestly ,it was easier to take photos of a bridge than to construct one.To cross these bridges may take 30 seconds but to plan and contruct, one may take three years. To blow up,it may take 3 seconds.God forbids..
Below is my attempt to expose the spiritual beauty of Jambatan Seri Gemilang by making it black and white. All colours are removed to high light the shape and configuration of the structure. As a professional engineer, the spiritual beauty of the inter play of structural members, the forces and the moments have more meaning than just its visual impacts.
Here are some info about the bridge from Perbadanan Putrajaya:
Jambatan Seri Gemilang
The main link between the Core Island (Presint 4) and Presint 5, this bridge is located at the southern end of the Persiaran Perdana. Categorised as a ceremonial bridge, the Seri Gemilang will be a landmark in Putrajaya serving as the main entrance to the Core Island from the south for motorists and pedestrians.
Bridge Structure
The bridge is made at a main span of 120m long and two spans 60m at each end making a total length of 240m. There are dual three lane carriageways of total 10.5m each comprising of 3 x 3.5m width for the lanes. The deck level varies from RL 34m at abutment to RL 36.75m at centre of the bridge.
The special features of the bridge include:
- Balusters fabricated from precast stone
- Specially designed lamp parts
- Distinctly designed towers
