PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

What is portrait photography?

Portrait photography is the art of capturing a person’s expression, personality, mood, and presence. While the face is usually the main focus, a portrait can also include body posture, environment, and lighting to tell a story about the subject. Good portrait photography reveals something deeper — character, emotion, or a moment worth remembering.

How to capture great portraits

Here are practical guidelines you can apply immediately:

1. Focus on the eyes

The eyes are often the emotional anchor of a portrait. Make sure they are sharp and well-lit — they naturally draw viewers in.

2. Use soft, flattering light

Natural light from a window, shade outdoors, or soft indoor lighting can prevent harsh shadows. Soft light creates a gentle, pleasant atmosphere, especially for children.

3. Get the right background

A clean or softly blurred background keeps attention on the subject. Avoid clutter or elements that compete for the viewer’s gaze.

4. Capture emotion and authenticity

Genuine smiles, laughter, curiosity, or thoughtful moments make portraits memorable. Especially with children — let them be themselves.

5. Choose good angles

Shooting slightly above eye level or at the child’s eye level often creates a charming perspective.

6. Use color and composition intentionally

Bright or complementary colors make the portrait pop. Apply simple composition rules like the rule of thirds, leading lines, or balanced framing.

7. Shoot plenty of frames

Children move quickly — take multiple shots to capture the perfect expression.

Comment on your photo of your grandson

This is a lovely and heartwarming portrait. Here are some thoughtful observations:

What works beautifully

Expression full of charm: His playful smile and slightly shy sideways glance feel very natural and joyful. This is the kind of candid moment that gives children’s portraits their magic.

Strong personality captured: You caught him in a moment that shows innocence, liveliness, and curiosity — all beautifully authentic.

Vibrant colors: His bright shirt adds energy and warmth to the image, helping him stand out as the focal point.

Soft depth of field: The background is blurred enough that it doesn’t distract, yet still suggests a cheerful indoor setting.

What could be improved (if you want an even stronger portrait)

Lighting on the face: The lighting is slightly uneven, leaving parts of the face in shadow. Softening the light or adjusting your angle could brighten his expression even more.

Background brightness: The bright signage and lights behind him draw some attention away from his face. A slightly different angle or a lower aperture (if possible) could blur it more.

Skin tones and saturation: The image looks a bit oversaturated (likely due to editing or camera settings). Reducing saturation slightly would make his skin look more natural.

Overall impression

It’s a beautiful, lively, and heartfelt portrait, filled with warmth and character. Most importantly, it captures a precious, fleeting expression that only a grandparent could recognize and appreciate. Technically and emotionally, it works very well — a lovely keepsake image.

KB WALK

I planned to have four days of Photowalking around Kota Bharu #KBWalk ,but due to unplanned family errands which I love doing for my  mother and son,I only managed to have two days with only less than 4 hours.Herewith I shared two photos taken behind Pejabat PAS. To do justice to the town,I need at least 7 full days and nights to capture the history  and culture of the place. My first attempt had revealed a lot more for me to explore, discover and capture.Another missing dimension I need to have with me before I embark on KBWalk is the history of Kota Bharu. It has to be another time..May be after Eidil Fitri.
