SMARTPHONE PHOTOGRAPHY AS CREATIVE PROJECT

Let me share this advice given to me to improve my smartphone photography:

Since you work analytically and build themes (urban, colour study, structural elegance), this framework will treat smartphone photography as a managed creative project, not casual shooting.
📱 SMARTPHONE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKFLOW FRAMEWORK (SPWF)
Core Philosophy
Shoot with intention. Process with discipline. Publish with purpose.
The framework has 6 Stages:
1. Intent
2. Preparation
3. Capture
4. Selection
5. Refinement
6. Publication & Archive
🔹 STAGE 1: INTENT (Why Am I Shooting?)
Before opening the camera app, decide:
• Is this spontaneous street?
• Is this a themed project? (e.g., Conversation of Colours)
• Is this documentary?
• Is this architectural study?
Define:
• Mood (serene, energetic, nostalgic)
• Dominant element (light, structure, colour, geometry)
• Output platform (Instagram, blog, exhibition)
This aligns your mind before touching settings.
🔹 STAGE 2: PREPARATION (Technical Setup)
A. Choose Mode
Situation Suggested Mode
Fast street Native auto
Planned project Manual app (e.g., Fotogear)
Low light Manual with ISO control
Architecture Manual exposure lock
B. Pre-Set Controls (if manual)
• ISO limit
• Minimum shutter speed
• White balance tone (warm/cool bias)
• Film simulation or colour profile
For your urban serenity style:
• Slightly muted contrast
• Controlled highlights
• Balanced shadows
🔹 STAGE 3: CAPTURE (Field Discipline)
1️⃣ Observe First
Light → Lines → Layers → Colour → Movement
2️⃣ Apply Visual Hierarchy
Ask:
• What dominates?
• What balances?
• What disrupts?
3️⃣ Exposure Discipline
Protect highlights first.
Let shadows fall naturally.
4️⃣ Shoot Variations
• Wide
• Mid
• Tight crop
• Alternative angle
Don’t overshoot randomly — shoot variations intentionally.
🔹 STAGE 4: SELECTION (Curation Mindset)
This is where many photographers fail.
Selection Criteria:
• Technical clarity
• Emotional tone
• Compositional strength
• Thematic alignment
• Colour consistency
Delete aggressively.
Think like a curator, not a collector.
🔹 STAGE 5: REFINEMENT (Editing Framework)
Keep editing structured.
Editing Order:
1. Crop & straighten
2. Exposure correction
3. Contrast curve
4. Colour balance
5. Selective adjustments
6. Final sharpening
Your Style Suggestion:
• Slightly cinematic tones
• Controlled saturation
• Soft highlight roll-off
• Subtle vignette (if needed)
Avoid:
• Over-HDR
• Over-sharpening
• Over-saturation
Consistency > drama.
🔹 STAGE 6: PUBLICATION & ARCHIVE
A. Publication Strategy
For thematic work:
• Post in sequence
• Use consistent caption structure
• Number the series
Example:
Conversation of Colours #03
Theme: Urban Warm vs Cool
B. Archive Structure
Organise by:
Year → Project → Selects → Published
Example:
2026
→ Conversation of Colours
→ MRT Structural Series
→ Urban Serenity
Back up monthly.
📊 OPTIONAL: PERFORMANCE REVIEW LOOP
Every 3 months:
Review:
• Which images performed well?
• Which themes resonated?
• What technical mistakes repeat?
Refine your shooting intention accordingly.
🔺 THE FRAMEWORK VISUAL
INTENT
PREPARATION
CAPTURE
SELECTION
REFINEMENT
PUBLICATION
REVIEW
It’s a cycle — not a straight line.
🎯 Strategic Insight
Most smartphone users:
Shoot → Edit → Post.
You:
Think → Design → Capture → Curate → Publish with narrative.
That difference builds long-term identity.

COMPARISON BETWEEN MY IPHONE 14 ProMax VS FUJIFILM XT20

No camera is suitable for every occasion. Here is a simple comparison. Both have their own strengths and weaknesses, and I love both. When I go photowalking with friends, I use more smartphones than the Fujifilm XT20. FUJIFILM XT20 iPhone 14 Pro Max (Smartphone) vs Fujifilm X-T20 (Mirrorless) – Image Quality Breakdown IPHONE 14 PRO MAX 1. Sensor & Processing iPhone 14 Pro Max Uses a 48 MP quad-pixel sensor that down-samples to 12 MP by default; ProRAW unlocks full 48 MP output   . Features Apple’s “Photonic Engine” that enhances detail, color, and low-light performance via computational photography  . Produces excellent detail, color accuracy, and dynamic range—especially in daylight; however, images sometimes show over-sharpening on foliage/glossy textures  . DXOMARK cites strengths like vivid color, wide dynamic range, sharp detail, and low noise; potential drawbacks include clipping highlights and noise indoors  . Fujifilm X-T20 Features a...

KB WALK

I planned to have four days of Photowalking around Kota Bharu #KBWalk ,but due to unplanned family errands which I love doing for my  mother and son,I only managed to have two days with only less than 4 hours.Herewith I shared two photos taken behind Pejabat PAS. To do justice to the town,I need at least 7 full days and nights to capture the history  and culture of the place. My first attempt had revealed a lot more for me to explore, discover and capture.Another missing dimension I need to have with me before I embark on KBWalk is the history of Kota Bharu. It has to be another time..May be after Eidil Fitri.
